Weekly TD-SCDMA Update January 19 - 25

- China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) announced on January 22 that China will invest approximately 400 billion RMB (US$58.5 billion; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) into the 3G arena, the China Business News reported, adding that China will also have a package of 15 supportive policies for TD-SCDMA, including providing financial support and technology support, encouraging network deployment, and integrating TD-SCDMA terminals into the government procurement process. The details of these policies are set to be released in February or March, 2009.

MIIT further stated that the Chinese telecom operators are expected to spend 170 billion RMB (US$24.9 billion) in 3G during 2009, including China Mobile's 58.8 billion RMB (US$8.6 billion) for TD-SCMDA and China Unicom's 60.0 billion RMB (US$8.8 billion) for WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), according to the same source. China Telecom recently also revealed that it will invest 80 billion RMB (US$11.7 billion) into 3G over next three years.
